OLD FISHERMAN    Our house was directly across the street from the clinic entrance of   Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore  We lived downstairs and rented the upstairs rooms to out-patients at the Clinic. One summer evening as I was preparing supper, there was a knock at the door I  opened it to see a truly awful looking man. 'Why, he's hardly taller than my eight-year-old, ' I thought as I stared at the stooped, shriveled body. But the appalling thing was his face, lopsided from swelling, red and raw Yet  his voice was pleasant as he said, 'Good evening. I've come to see if you've  a room for just one night. I came for a treatment this morning from the  eastern shore, and there's no bus 'till morning.' He told me he'd  been hunting for a room since noon but with no success; no one seemed to  have a room. 'I guess it's my face. I know it looks terrible, but my doctor  says with a few more treatments... .' For a moment I hesitated, but his  next words convinced me: 'I could sleep in this rocking chair on the porch. My bus leaves early in the morning.' I told him we would find him a  bed, but to rest on the porch.  I went inside and finished getting  supper. When we were ready, I asked the old man if he would join us. 'No  thank you. I have plenty' And he held up a brown paper bag. When I  had finished the dishes, I went out on the porch to talk with him a few  minutes. It didn't take a long time to see that this old man had an oversized heart crowded into that tiny body. He told me he fished for a living to support his daughter, her five children and her husband, who was hopelessly crippled from a back injury. He didn't tell it by way of complaint; in fact, every other sentence was prefaced with thanks to God for a blessing He was grateful that no pain accompanied his disease, which was apparently a form of skin cancer. He thanked God for giving him the strength to keep going. At bedtime, we put a camp cot in the children's room for him. When I got up in the morning, the bed linens were neatly folded, and the little man was out on the porch. He refused breakfast, but just before he left for his bus, haltingly, as if asking a great favor, he said, 'Could I please come back and stay the next time I have a treatment? I  won't put you out a bit. I can sleep fine in a chair.' He paused a moment  and then added, 'Your children made me feel at home. Grownups are bothered  by my face, but children don't seem to mind.' I told him he was welcome to come again. AND on his next trip he arrived a little after seven in the morning. As a gift, he brought a big fish and a quart of the largest  oysters I had ever seen. He said he had shucked them that morning before he left so that they'd be nice and fresh. I knew his bus left at 4 a.m. , and I wondered what time he had to get up in order to do this for us. In  the years he came to stay overnight with us there was never a time that he did not bring us fish or oysters or vegetables from his garden.  Other times we received packages in the mail, always by special delivery; fish and oysters packed in a box of fresh young spinach or kale, every leaf carefully washed. Knowing that he must walk three miles to mail these and knowing how little money he had made the gifts doubly p recious.    When I received these little remembrances, I often thought of a comment our next-door neighbor made after he left that first morning.   'Did you keep that awful looking man last night? I turned him away! You can lose roomers by putting up such people!' Maybe we did lose roomers once or twice But, oh! If only they could have known him, perhaps their  illness would have been easier to bear. I know our family always will be grateful to have known him; from him we learned what It was to accept the  bad without complaint and the good with gratitude to God. Recently I  was visiting a friend who has a greenhouse. As she showed me her flowers, we came to the most beautiful one of all, a golden chrysanthemum, bursting with  blooms. But to my great surprise, it was growing in an old dented, rusty bucket. I thought to myself, 'If this were my plant, I'd put it in the  loveliest container I had!' My friend changed my mind. 'I ran short  of pots,' she explained, 'and knowing how beautiful this one would be, I  thought it wouldn't mind starting out in this old pail. It's just for a little while, till I can put it out in the garden.' She must have  wondered why I laughed so delightedly, but I was imagining just such a scene  in heaven. There's an especially beautiful one,' God might have said when he  came to the soul of the sweet old fisherman. 'He won't mind starting in this small body.' All this happened long ago -- and now, in God's garden, how tall this lovely soul must stand. The LORD does not look at the things man looks at.  Man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart.' Friends are very special. They make you smile and encourage you to succeed.  They lend an ear and they share a word of  praise. Show your friends how much you care. Pass this on, and brighten someone's day. Nothing, will happen if you do not decide to pass it along. The only thing that will, happen, if you do pass it on is that someone might smile (or cry like I did...) ~ because, of you! Friends are special Hugs from GOD!

Day #15, roughly, of my study of Matthew.  Now, these are 1/2 days for
me - the cold has greatly cut my productivity, at least that is the excuse I give
myself.  Getting older may be more like it.  Oh well.

But I pour over and over, line by line, attempting to deeply, deeply, deeply be
grasped by the meaning, and the implications of just Matthew, so far.

THIS IS A SHOCKING MASSIVE REVELATION FOR ME.  Am I the last to get it?
THIS IS THE WHOLE DEAL OF THE GOSPEL -

There are two families on earth (not three, not millions):

Family 1, THE GIVERS.  Those that "see" everyone as Immediate Family and
Live accordingly  - the ML King's, Diane Wilson's, Col. Ann Wrights, Eleanor
Roosevelts, Vandana Shivas, Barack & Michelle Obamas, Gandhis...

Family 2. THE TAKERS.  Those that are blind to the Fact that we are All Immediate
Family and exist, mostly in isolation, at war with all but a few, to get as
much stuff for themselves as possible - almost everyone you have ever
known....

Hell - the life experience of the "blind" masses, cuz the Life we are created for,
and capable of IS the life as Brother or Sister to ALL.  Every other option
is so massively deficient in its ability to satisfy our emotional need to be significant
that we are reduced to hideous, parasitic, clinically addicted, craving shadows
of what we were designed to be, created to be, born to be.  And it is EXACTLY the
Hell of the Addict, repleat with the impenetrable DENIAL and DELUSIONS.

Heaven - the Life experience of those who "see" that WE ARE ALL
IMMEDIATE FAMILY - the ML King's, Diane Wilson's, Col. Ann Wrights, Eleanor

of the greatest psychologist of all time - Alfred Adler.  At this point in my

My Goodness! "Peace Work IS 1. Being, 2. Establishing, 3. Building the "New Normal."

[NOTE: This is among my most difficult, most important insights.]

With the current "Normal" - Killing, Bloodshed, Exploitation, Environmental
Destruction are NORMAL, TO  BE EXPECTED, THE LIKELY OUTCOME OF
OUR "NORMAL" WAY OF BEING - I MEAN, OUR "SELFISH" WAY OF BEING.

"Few people chose war.  They chose SELFISHNESS and the result
was war."  David Dellinger.

Note:  Regarding the following, reflect on our major movements toward
Peace, Humanity, Health - Civil Rights, Suffrage, Anti-Apartheid, EARLY
Christianity... and you may see the usefulness of the following framework
of understanding.

"Example is not the major thing in influencing people.  It is the only
thing."  Albert Schweitzer.

Peace Work, or in "religious" terms, Saving folks and societies, is:

1.  Being the "Change,"  the New Normal, that is, the Universal Love
incarnate we need to see in the world.

2.  Establishing the New Normal: By virtue of Being the
New Normal, SOME ONLOOKERS MAY "SEE" THAT THEY
ARE NOT NORMAL, NOT "HEALTHY," NOT THE "NEW NORMAL," AND
WISH TO BE "HEALED,"  TO BECOME "HEALTHY" TOO.  Peace Work,
Saving involves explicitly facilitating this awakening to the new normal.
KEY: Folks don't Change unless they "see" that they are Not Normal,
"Un-Healthy," Un-Human..." in whatever terms [again, think civil rights,
suffrage, early Christianity, anti-apartheid....]  This stage of the
process involves the establishment of a critical mass, as small as that
may be - a nucleus of those that have become the "New Normal," the
change we need to see; the EMBODIMENT of the New Normal, the
New Way of Being Human.

3.  Building the New Normal using 1 and 2 above as the foundation
and template, using new "institutions" to proliferate the New Normal
WHILE avoiding the almost inevitable, ENTIRELY FATAL step of
Institutional-IZING the New Normal - which is certain Death, and
certain STRENGTHEN the Old Normal - that has us on the edge of
destroying what Civilization there is, once and for all.

OMG, I was so disgustingly over-privileged in my youth.  Hideous. Truly SHAMEful.

My Favorite car I ever had was this, below, blue, but not this exact one.  Given to me, of course. :-(

I had to get rid of it.  Doing so broke my heart. (Yes, that was  wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy
sick, but it did. I've grown some since, in my Values, thank God).

It could not be depended  upon to do what I needed done, when I needed it.  It was a freekin
car!  It had no malice!  It had no mal-intent!  But it was undependable.  As fun, beautifully
designed, stunning, high performing (when not broken) as it was, I needed something I could
EXTREMELY depend on.  And it was not EXTREMELY dependable.  With all its huge virtues,
it was a disaster for me, and it went.

PROFESSIONAL definition of '"Quality:"  MEETING EXPECTATIONS.'  Lack of it bankrupt GM,
and slaughtered countless workers.

We simplify to the point of TOTAL DISTORTION AND ERROR

The point of them is not that they RISKED Dying, and WERE

"Harsh." Of 370 Gospel Categorizations, "Harsh" is the most frequent.

For 8 days now or so I've been studying Jesus' words, and
categorizing His words, verse by verse , that I may come to more
deeply, MUCH more deeply grasp, learn and BE GRASPED
by what He died to tell  us.  We will not make it unless we
begin to stand on his shoulders.  Time's up for us.

Of 370 Gospel Categorizations I found myself creating
(Universal Love, Family, Our Father, Scribe....), "Harsh"
is the most frequent along with Our Father, Universal Love, and
One Immediate Family-No Double Standards.

This guy Jesus found it essential to be Harsh, in such a Cruel,
Deadly, Suffering, "Harsh," world; that has gotten much,
much, much more evil since then; including our new, powerful
immunity to Him and the Truths He died to show us.

Now, "Harsh" is not to be confused with Anger, or
Hostility, both of which He unequivocally labeled - Deadly
Errors (Sins).

One out of every seven verses of his words, out of 340
Matt. verses of Jesus in all, I had to label HARSH.

Huh. William Thomas / Thomas More. And "A Man for All Seasons."

Huh.  I just this second realized - Thomas More, and Wm. THOMAS, both
had the same name.  I was thinking of the play because
Thomas loved it so.

It seems that when I told our [William] Thomas prop1.org
about it maybe 3 years ago he had never heard of the story,
a play really, "A Man for All Seasons."  I got it for him, and he
watched it over, and over, and over, and over. 

I got it for him because it is a story that has gripped
me since I first saw the movie many decades ago.  And I wept
when I saw it, as did our Thomas.  It made me think of
our Thomas - his better nature - the Profoundly Good Man.

It is about a man, a good man, THE ONE GOOD MAN IN ENGLAND,
THAT would NOT, IF IT COST HIM HIS VERY LIFE do anything,
say anything, victimize anyone, do whatever it took to stay in the graces of
their patron - Henry VIII.  EVERYONE ELSE IN ENGLAND,
(except for his stoic wife and sheroic daughter) WOULD,
AND DID.  Thomas More's CRIME was that he would not
SUCK UP TO THE PATRON HENRY VIII, as all the other courtiers,
parasites actually, would and did, ENDLESSLY.  Why would he not? 
Because that would be betrayal, of Truth, Goodness, Humanity, of his
fellow human beings, and his FRIEND Henry VIII.  "It is as much
a duty to not cooperate with evil, as it is to avoid doing evil."
Gandhi.

Henry of course had the loot, castles, food, entertainment, and
even the power to cause anyone's death [ultimately Thomas More's].

So the parasites, the Takers, did their infinite role plays, contortions, flatteries,
deceits, lies, fakeries, games, charades, token contributions... and they lived,
[if being a parasite is actually "living???"].  Thomas More, who would not,
was for a long, long, long time tolerated - and then he was put to death,
by them all [except his wife and daughter.]  Like Jesus before him,
and King and Gandhi after him, and martyrs and Saints.

Government (but under Pr. Obama DRAMATICALLY less so),

Church,
GOP,

Jesus - He was ENTIRELY about re-conceiving Family, IN THIS LIFE. ENTIRELY.

Duh - you say?  :-)  Yes, I AM slow.  But my head is spinning with
the implications, grasping it, letting it grasp me, checking to see
if this is a correct understanding....  Huge.

I continue in more than a week's immersion in Jesus words,  as
I do every Christ-mass week or so now, in these last few days
specifically in Matthew, just for practical reasons.  Line by line, over
and over.

I am Stunned by the new appreciation that has exploded
within me this time - how CENTRAL is His notion, His Vision,
His Belief that THE VITAL DISTINCTION among us IN THIS LIFE  is which of
two Families we belong to - His Father's or, by whatever name,
Satan's, Greeds, Lusts, Selfinessess's.  That EVERYTHING, Every
Hope depends on 1. we as individuals bringing to TOP OF MIND
an ACUTE AWARENESS ALWAYS OF WHAT PRIMARY FAMILY WE ARE TRULY
IN - That of the Givers or the Takers (including bio-fam as PRIMARY
affiliation, instead of Givers/Father's), Our Father's and Satan's
respectively.  And, 2. that what being Saved means, what being
Converted means is Moving IN THE HEART and BODY from the Family of
the Takers to the Family of the Givers; and in doing so we
create or increase the opportunity of attracting others to
Convert to His Family.  THIS IS HUGE FOR ME.  HUGE.  It is what
has been going on in me for a decade or more, but to more clearly
see it, that is a massive gift.  And it can aid me in His Work.

It is only Start that didn't "get this?"  "Who is my mother, who
are my brothers," is NOT just a really important aside.  It is the
whole mission for Jesus to A. make the distinction of 2 Families
CLEAR (I came to divide), B. Elevate Our Father's Family - the
Kingdom; and C. Get us about Saving ourselves and Others
by joining the currently minute Family of Givers, Our Father's
Family.

I have much more growing to do in these coming days in this
new clarity.

Con't: Selfishness IS Hell. There IS no other. None other is needed.

It's that we are born these nearly infinitely Giving,
Universally Loving, Creative Spirits, and when our
culture stuffs into ever smaller containers of Selfishness,
well it is Hell - Prison - living Death, Clinically.  And the
Madness is, most of us don't see it, and think everything
is fine.  It isn't.  Not for us, not for those we lead into
the same Walking Deadness.  Will the sleepers awake?

Of which family are you?
Really?

Your Soul depends on

Perception ...something to think about... Washington, D.C. Metro Station on a cold January morning ... The man with a violin played six Bach pieces for about 45 minutes.. During that time approx. two thousand people went through the station, most of them on their way to work. After three minutes a middle aged man noticed there was a musician playing. He slowed his pace and stopped for a few seconds and then hurried to meet his schedule. 4 minutes later: The violinist received his first dollar: a woman threw the money in the hat and, without stopping, continued to walk. 6 minutes: A young man leaned against the wall to listen to him, then looked at his watch and started to walk again. 10 minutes: A three-year old boy stopped but his mother tugged him along hurriedly. The kid stopped to look at the violinist again, but the mother pushed hard and the child continued to walk, turning his head all the time. This action was repeated by several other children. Every parent, without exception, forced their children to move on quickly. 45 minutes: The musician played continuously. Only six people stopped and listened for a short while. About 20 gave money but continued to walk at their normal pace... The man collected a total of $32. 1 hour: He finished playing and silence took over. No one noticed. No one applauded, nor was there any recognition. No one knew this, but the violinist was Joshua Bell, one of the greatest musicians in the world. He played one of the most intricate pieces ever written, with a violin valued at $3.5 million dollars. Two days before Joshua Bell sold out a theatre in Boston where the seats averaged $200. This is a true story. Joshua Bell playing incognito in the metro station was organized by the Washington Post as part of a social experiment about perception, taste and people's priorities. The questions raised: in a common place environment at an inappropriate hour, do we perceive beauty? Do we stop to appreciate it? Do we recognize talent in an unexpected context? One conclusion reached from this experiment could be this: If we do not have a moment to stop and listen to one of the best musicians in the world, playing some of the finest music ever written, with one of the most beautiful instruments ever made... Imagine if we eliminated words like cyanide,
nitrogen, carbon dioxide... and only had the
word Oxygen for all gas.  That would be a problem.

Well we have a MUCH bigger problem.  We only,
CARELESSLY use the world Love for:

Universal Love
Lust
Sex
Desire
Friendship
Acquantainceship
One night stands
Pleasurableness
Blood relationships
Romance
Reciprocal relations.....

Love is Universal OR IT IS NOT LOVE.
