JERUSALEM — Several Israeli ministers have accused the army of "spin" over its claims that activists on board a Gaza-bound flotilla plan to harm Israeli soldiers, Maariv newspaper reported on Wednesday.
French ship already set sail; still unclear when rest of ships will be joining after encountering problems in Greek port, which activists claim was sabotage by Israel.
IDF chief Benny Gantz says flotilla is yet another excuse to seek Israels deligitimization. Defense Minister Ehud Barak says if flotilla activists care about human suffering, they should work to free Gilad Schalit.
Two of the ships have been held in Greece following a legal complaint by Shurat HaDin-Israel Law Center suggesting that some of the ships might be lacking insurance or improperly registered.
The Gaza Freedom Flotilla II is setting sail for Gaza. The flotilla includes The Audacity of Hope, a boat containing 50 American citizens and letters of support for the people of Gaza from thousands of Americans. According to its own passengers, the boat's passengers will be unarmed, will carry no goods, and do "not serve the agenda of any political leadership, government or group", but "are engaged solely in nonviolent action in support of the Palestinian people and their human rights."
This being so, the boat's passengers, as well as several members of Congress, have urged the Obama Administration to ensure safe passage of the flotilla to Gaza. Please add your voice to theirs.
