28-year-old
activist Jeremy Hammond was sentenced today to 10 years in prison after
pleading guilty to participating in the Anonymous hack into the
computers of the private intelligence firm Stratfor.
Jeremy's
co-defendants with LulzSec in other countries have received shorter
sentences, the most being 2 years. Learn more about the CFAA law which
is being used to put Jeremy in jail for 10 years, and also contributed
to the death of activist Aaron Swartz: http://freejeremy.net/about-cfaa/
"The acts of civil disobedience and direct action that I am being
sentenced for today are in line with the principles of community and
equality that have guided my life. I hacked into dozens of high profile
corporations and government institutions, understanding very clearly
that what I was doing was against the law, and that my actions could
land me back in federal prison. But I felt that I had an obligation to
use my skills to expose and confront injustice—and to bring the truth to light.
Could I have achieved the same goals through legal means? I have tried
everything from voting petitions to peaceful protest and have found that
those in power do not want the truth to be exposed. When we speak truth
to power we are ignored at best and brutally suppressed at worst. We
are confronting a power structure that does not respect its own system
of checks and balances, never mind the rights of it’s own citizens or
the international community."
The
Arctic ice we all depend on is disappearing fast. Oil companies like
Shell and their partner Gazprom that caused the Arctic to melt in the
first place are looking to profit from the disappearing ice.
On
September 18, 28 activists stood up against Gazprom's plans to drill
for oil in the fragile Arctic. Two journalists were there to document
this peaceful action. Now they are all detained in Russia for standing
up for what's right.
One
of our favorite people, Madison Kimrey (the standout, 12yo activist in
NC), gives us a shout-out in her most recent interview. Keep up the good
work Madison!
Will
you help us tell Millennium that we're not going to let neighbors into
our communities that poison us and destroy the climate? Great! Meet at
Holladay Park on Tuesday, 10AM. Millennium will be across the street
hosting a luncheon at the Double Tree. Here's the info: Stand up to Millennium coal! This image shows how much toxic coal they want to export through Longview, WA.
