"I ship out next week. I'm a Marine. THANKS for what you do," at the Vigil tonight.

"Brother, you keep your butt safe, hear," Start replied?!!!!  "The only group
in this country I have any respect for is our men and and women in uniform.
I'm TOTALLY AGAINST killing, but I TOTALLY stand for commitment, putting your life
on the line for what you believe, sacrifice for others... and you guys do that;
and everyone else is on the take.  Thank you for your service.

The greatest complement I'm occasionally paid is, 'Start, were you a Marine?"

I pray with all my heart he stays safe.

'The job of the citizen is to die for the common good.' Gandhi synthesis

'The job of the citizen is to die
for the common good.'
Gandhi synthesis, consequence of his reading of
"Unto This Last," by John Juskin, one
of the two books that created the
man named Gandhi.

"My non-violence does not admit of running away from danger and leaving
dear ones unprotected. Between violence and cowardly flight, I can only prefer
violence to cowardice. I can no more preach
non-violence to a coward than I can tempt
a blind man to enjoy healthy scenes.

Non-violence is the summit of bravery. And in my own experience, I have
had no difficulty in demonstrating to men
trained in the school of violence the
superiority of non-violence.
As a coward, which
I was for years, I harboured violence. I began to prize non-violence only
when I began to shed cowardice.... A rabbit that runs away from the bull terrier
is not particularly non-violent. The poor thing trembles at the sight of the terrier
and runs for very life. (YI, 28-5-1924, p178), M.K. Gandhi.

"Peace Activists"steadfastly ignore Start. The Secret Service ask if they can help, and offer comradeship. Hmmmm. "Give me a military man any day. Don't give me any cowards." Gandhi

RE: "Peace Activists"steadfastly ignore Start. The Secret Service ask if they can help, and offer comradeship. Hmmmm.

"Give me a military man any day. Don't give me any cowards;" and,
"I consider myself a soldier;" and
[paraphrase] - 'If to prevent some atrocity you find yourself unable to do so by non-violent means,
be violent if you must, but do not just stand there.'
Gandhi.

Last night was the anniversary Japan time for the Nagasaki bombing. About 20 activists showed up for a brief commemoration, inches in front of where Connie and I spend our lives commemorating Hiroshima and Nagasaki - 7 days per week, 52 weeks per year.

So these activists were really appreciative of our commitment, right? Of the 20, 16 scrupulously made neither eye contact nor voice contact with me, nor contact or acknowledgment of any kind. Had it been Connie, I suspect it would have been different. Had it been Thomas, it would have been different, however all but two or so in the group never really helped Thomas or Connie when they really needed it. I do NOT take it personally.

With the exception of Thomas, then Ellen, Liz, Gael and a few others, this has been my experience with the so called "Peace Activists" in DC - they don't like me and they certainly do not support the work I do. And I am totally OK with that; and under the circumstances I would not want it to change. But it is interesting.

BUT START!!!! you stupid fool! Don't you understand how antagonizing, intimidating, etc. they find you?!?!?!? Well, yes I do, not that this is ever my intent. But what is interesting is, there is another group that SHOULD find me just as distateful, or more so, but they do not; they never have - The Police in DC.

This is in stark contrast to the support, respect and encouragement I've received from many in the Secret Service, Capitol Police and Park Police in the 5-6 years I've been doing Peace Work here in DC. "Hey Start, it is awfully cold out there, if you need to come into the cruiser, let me know." "Hey Start, it is too hot out there. If you need some cold water, or to come into the cruiser to cool off, let me know." They stop by to talk - genuine mutual respect and camaraderie. "Hey, if anyone gives you any trouble, just let us know." Etc.

Yes, BOTH groups have reason to shun me. But one, instead, recognizes something we hold in common - Commitment, Self Sacrifice, Courage, Dedication to a Cause.... The other finds these characteristics of mine suspicious, offensive, antagonistic, threatening, intimidating, "violent" .... Gandhi would not find them so.

I wonder if the rather stunning shunning I was treated to last night was a result of the following email of mine published in the Washington Post yesterday in response to an article a week ago on the Secret Service that made me cry: "The Making of an Agent," July 26 http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/07/17/AR2009071701785.html .

My original email spoke of how Gandhi said, "Give me a military man to work with any day; don't give me any cowards;" and "I consider myself a soldier." The portion they published http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/07/31/AR2009073102017.html was:

Jay "Start Loving" McGinley of Washington e-mailed:

"I man the 28-year Peace Vigil outside the White House, nine hours per day, 365 days per year.
I observe these Secret Service officers all day long. I love these guys.
Yes, I am totally committed to nonviolence.

But I also am totally committed to courage, honor, duty and service --

and these [agents] are among my heroes."

And they are among my heroes, right along side of Thomas, Diane, Ann, Liz, Ellen....

Our Men and Women in Uniform - the One Group in this Country I Respect and With Whom I Feel Affinity. (Oh, Our Youth Too)

(... And too the folks that come to visit the Vigil.)  The one group I respect in this country is our men and women in uniform.  Yes, my life is dedicated to the elimination of folks killing others,  but Courage is the hallmark of Humanity, of Human Health.  That our men and women in uniform have been misled to thinking hostility is the answer does not deny their courage and humanity.  Our men and women in Uniform are the one group in the US that can be depended upon to lay their lives on the line for the stranger, and for what they believe in.  All the rest of us are on the take, doing unto others before they can do unto us; or just, self-righteously sitting on the sidelines criticizing others, aiding and abetting needless suffering through out criminal neglect.  "I consider myself a soldier."  Gandhi.  "Give me a military man to work with any day; do not give me any cowards."  Gandhi.  It is unmistakable the admiration and respect many of the Secret Service have for my efforts; as my admiration for them is also clear.  Quite a contrast with the near universal disrespect I receive from the "activist" community, and the "church" community; disrespect that I have come to experience as a powerful affirmation.  :-)

Obama pens 'real' notes to fallen troops' families

Tuesday, February 17, 2009

In his first few weeks in office, sometime between celebratory bill signings and phone calls from foreign leaders, President Obama sat in the Oval Office for the most somber task of his presidency - penning letters to families of troops killed in combat.

"This was real, it was personal, it was so important to us," said Thya Merz, whose son Marine Lance Cpl. Julian Brennan was killed Jan. 24 in Afghanistan.

The letter was signed "Barack," Ms. Merz told The Washington Times.

"Not 'president,' just his first name, and it just felt like, OK, my son has been acknowledged," she said.

Mr. Obama personalizes each letter, asking staffers to gather details about the service member, such as their hometown and where they were stationed, a White House aide said. The letters are sent to parents and spouses, and sometimes children of the fallen troops.

The president writes the notes by hand, then the letters are typed before he adds his signature.

Mr. Obama wrote the first few letters for troops who died in Iraq and Afghanistan while George W. Bush was president, and has written at least a dozen more since taking office.

The president told NBC News that the duty falls to him, though he did not initiate the wars and opposed the invasion of Iraq. In those moments of signing the letters, he said, "you realize every decision you make counts."

The White House declined to release any of the private letters or the names of families who received them, but The Times spoke with some who shared the contents of their letters.

Cpl. Brennan, 25, was supporting combat operations in Afghanistan's Farah province when he was killed last month.

Ms. Merz said the president's letter to her family in honor of her son was "lovely" and added, "It is meaningful to have Julian's death noted personally by him."

Six weeks before Cpl. Brennan was deployed, the Brooklyn resident married his fiancee to make sure she would have benefits if he was killed abroad.

Ms. Merz said she and her son often talked about national service. Like the president, she opposed the war in Iraq. As for Afghanistan, she described herself as ambivalent, but said that she and her son came to an agreement that "if our nation was going to engage in military action, everybody should serve."

As a parent of someone in combat, she realized, "I no longer have the privilege of saying I don't agree and not paying attention to what our nation was doing," she said.

Ms. Merz said she was struck by the personal tone of Mr. Obama's letter, which arrived before the official correspondence from Congress, and she wasn't sure whether they were his words or those of a staffer.

When told by The Times that Mr. Obama writes the letters himself, she said the words became more powerful.

"It says to me that he, too, will be paying attention to more than just the numbers, but the real stories," Ms. Merz said.

"One of the things I felt committed to even though I didn't agree with our military ventures was reading the names of the troops killed as they were listed," she said. "I just need to think about these people as individuals, and I hope that as a nation we are doing that and seeing them as real sons and daughters."

She added that Cpl. Brennan was "just beginning to grasp the real life of the Afghanis around him, feeling very committed to the human side of what was happening in Afghanistan and Iraq."

Their last conversation was on Inauguration Day, four days before Cpl. Brennan was killed by a roadside bomb. Both supported Mr. Obama's election, but they spoke that day about the Afghan people, she said.

Ms. Merz said she had been considering making the trip from New York to Washington for the inaugural festivities, but "I'm glad I didn't. I was home to get my son's call."

"I am so glad the president is trying to do the right thing personally in terms of families and the soldiers," she said. "He has a monumental task in front of him."

As Mr. Obama adjusts to the traditions bestowed upon the president as commander in chief, the duty is far different from saluting the Marine standing next to his Marine One helicopter or getting used to people standing when he walks into the room.

The president said on NBC News that the letters serve as a reminder - "that you've got hundreds of thousands of people - around the world who are putting themselves in harm's way and you are the commander in chief."

The White House said copies of the letters are preserved for historical archives.

The aide described the letters as "very gracious" but would not share the text because of the sensitive and personal nature of their content. The letters mention that the president appreciates the service member's sacrifice.

While serving as a U.S. senator, Mr. Obama would send families of Illinois service members condolence letters and an American flag that had flown over the Capitol.

Some he would call personally.

Mr. Bush also sent personal letters to the families of every one of the more than 4,000 troops who have died in the two wars, he told The Times in an interview last year. He said he leaned on his wife, Laura, for support in the gut-wrenching task.

Mr. Bush also met privately with more than 500 families of troops killed in action and with more than 950 wounded veterans, said Carlton Carroll, a White House spokesman during the Bush administration.

"Everything you do matters," Mr. Obama told Fox News a few days after the NBC interview. "I'm now signing letters to the families of troops who have fallen in Iraq or Afghanistan.

"Every time you sign that, you are reminded that you have enormous responsibilities and so, that's why all of these debates - when I'm talking to Democrats or Republicans, one of the things I try to remind them and something I remind myself every single day is the only criteria for what I do should be - is it working for the American people?

"Because this job is too big, too important, to just want to occupy space," he said. "And if I've spent the next four years, every day, making decisions based on that single criteria, is this going to help the American people achieve their dreams and keep them safe, then I'll be able to look at myself in the mirror and say, 'You know what, you did a good job.' TODAY'S MASS TERRORISTS: THE MIDDLE CLASS

My US sistersbrothers,

We've all thought how horrible it is that US CEOs make 30-300 times what their workers make, right?

Look in the mirror. YOU are that CEO to 4 billion of your family. YOU make 30-3000 times what 4 billion of your brothers and sisters make.

Why do these 4 billion put up with that? The US Military you fund Starves and Kills them into submission.

So far.

You, you middle class, are a deliberate creation of the power elite at the beginning of the 2oth century. The power elite realized that the only way to protect their own wealth was to create a large buffer to crush the poor - the middle class. They created you, they bought you, and they (not God) own you.

WE NEED 95% OF THE MILITARY PERSON'S CHARACTER. GANDHI KNEW THIS.

Elsewhere on this site numerous posts cite Gandhi's preference for military men because of the preeminent worth he placed on courage. Also discussed on other posts is the book by John Ruskin, "Unto this Last" that had profound impact on the young Gandhi - highlighting that the mass segment of society could be depended upon for its cowardice and self-serving behavior - the merchant class; US, us.

Where besides the military and among illegal migrant workers can we find high percentages of people exercising civic duty, self sacrifice, humility, service, courage...?

"THE EARLY CHRISTIAN CHURCH COULD NOT..." P. BERRIGAN

Must read all of Phil Berrigan at Jonah House. The following is from Scapegoating:

"The early Christian Church could not bear the purity and weight of the true meaning of Jesus' execution. It could not grasp the sheer voluntariness of the Cross, the voluntary love of His choice. And so the belief grew that God sent Jesus to die, that from his conception He was doomed to die, the divine scapegoat. Theology acquired a determinism, even tinges of fatalism. The divine/human mission to restore God's Kingdom began to fade; the Church's unequivocal condemnation of violence and war began to fade. The empire began to absorb Christians, exacting taxes and military service from them."

BECOMING A SOLDIER IS TO BECOME A DIFFERENT HUMAN TYPE

Of fundamental importance to personal Joy / Heaven in this life is to realize that we have available to us the option of not one, as our culture would have us believe, but two profoundly OPPOSITE states of mind:
  1. Selfishness
  2. Brotherliness / Otherishness

It has just struck me that there is an institution that consistantly and relyably CONVERTS individuals during the course of one's enlistment from Selfishness to Brotherliness (Brotherliness of an important sort). THE U.S. MILITARY does this.

The points here are that:

  1. The choice of Otherishness is one that anyone can make as we see in the choice made by millions in the military;
  2. Otherishness (the READINESS to give one's life for others) is profoundly opposite to Selfisnness as we can clearly see in this mass military "conversion" that ;
  3. WAR, such intensity of commitment, trumps any alternative through its overwhelming Joyfulness / Purpose / Meaning. From movies, imagination and personal knowledge we can see that there was no price that could get Ryan to leave the war (Saving Private Ryan.)

ATTN MERCHANTS! "UNTO THE LEAST OF THESE..."

In the face of emergency where do you expect to find the good Dr., minister, nurse, soldier? At the emergency helping!

"Unto This Last (1868)," is one of two books to galvanize Gandhi in his early 20's. The thrust of these 3 essays is that nothing less should be expected of merchants. Their goods are the life's blood of society and they should be every bit as morally responsible to "the least of these my family," as are the best of Dr.s, soldiers, nurses....

THE WORLD IS ONE BIG EMERGENCY AND MERCHANTS SHOULD FOCUS ENTIRELY ON "THE LEAST OF THESE" AS BROTHERS AND SISTERS. NOTHING LESS. NOTHING MORE. NOTHING ELSE.

SOLDIERS HAVE LOWER LIFE / HEALTH EXPECTANCY

If this does not hold true for a Soldier of the Almighty, then s/he is not really a soldier of the Almighty, not on such a suffering planet as this one.

"If men are not willing to practice the way of non-violence [Militant Global Brotherliness] with the same kind of commitment and recklessness of cost or consequences as they practice the way of war and as Communists work for Communism, clearly non-violence will not work." A. J. Muste

"Soldiers in the horror of battle offer solemn testimony that life is not a hunt for pleasure, but an engagement for service; that there are things more valuable than life; that the world is not a vacuum. Either we make it an altar for God or it is invaded by demons. There can be no neutrality. Either we are ministers of the sacred or slaves of evil. Let the blasphemy of our time not become an eternal scandal. Let future generations not loathe us for having failed to preserve what prophets and saints, martyrs and scholars have created in thousands of years. The apostles of force have shown that they are great in evil. Let us reveal that we can be as great in goodness. We will survive if we shall be as fine and sacrificial in our homes and offices, in our Congress and clubs, as our soldiers are on the fields of battle." Rabbi Abraham J. Heschel

Stop a soldier of Revolutionary Brotherhood? Killed him.

The other book that Killed Gandhi the Barrister, Birthed Gandhi Social Warrior

"Unto this Last" by John Rustin first published in 1860. These are actually a series of three essays that Gandhi read. Along with Tolstoy's "Kingdom of God is Within You," transformed and created the Gandhi that for a brief time, transformed the world. The central idea of "Unto This Last?" ["Unto the Least of These"] Atleast in Ruskin's day he viewed that there were 5 major segments of society, four of which shared a vital characteristic, the fifth of which did not, should and by not sharing it mortallly threatened the very wellbeing of society: Doctors, Lawyers, Soldiers and Ministers: WOULD PREDICTABLY LAY DOWN THEIR LIVES FOR THOSE THEY SERVE. The Merchant sector: WOULD TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THEIR CLIENTS, AND NEVER LAY DOWN THEIR LIVES FOR THEM. Please think about the implications of this. Certainly Jesus calls for all of us to lay down our lives, TO LAY DOWN OUR LIVES for "The least of these our brothers." For the Merchant class, the majority of us in the western world such an ideas is laughable! And we wonder why the world is turning into a hell.

JESUS SHOWED US HOW TO WIN THE GAME - END WAR, STAVE OFF ARMAGEDDON

We haven't seen it.

Jesus was a psychologist. Get this, get over it, get on with it, or the game is over... Get this, get on with it, and the world may yet be Saved.

Football players know how to "see" what is happening, and what "will happen" on the football field. They truly and deeply "know" what is going on.

There is no evidence of this in any group that calls itself "Christian," "Activist," or "Nonviolent Revolutionary."

We are like this: Imagine that a Nuclear Powered, Indestructable Lap Top was transported back 2000 or 4000. Years. Imagine the "mysticism," the "Ritual," the "Religion" it would inspire. It could be hundreds or thousands of years until its real value was undersoood.

Instead of growth charts, detailed strategies, objective goals, quantification of results... all the tools that enable the Pentagon, and Military / Industrial complex to be the Church, to rule the world, are unavalable to us because Christianity is all about some future life, and Saving ourselves or that Life.

No. In the name of God see this. Jesus absolutely, concretely showed us the strategy for shocking, clinically shocking humanity into its Right Mind.

Gandhi's Bible, Tolstoy's "The Kingdom of God is Within You," the entire reason it was written was so Tolstoy could make this point as best he could: 'The entire world has been exposed to Jesus teachings. It is leading to only horror so far. But I think, like a supersaturated chemical solution in a glass, with just the right impact it can instantly crystalize and transform entirely - in a flash.' [paraphrase]

Tolstoy, Gandhi, King... were all "mad" with similar inklings.

BUT WE LACKED ADLER'S MODEL OF MENTAL HEALTH! PHYSICISTS LACKED EINSTEIN'S THEORY OF RELATIVITY! LOOK WHAT THEY'VE DONE IN THE DECADES SINCE! LOOK WHAT ALL THE PHYSICAL MANIFESTATIONS THAT EINSTEINS THEORY UNLEASHED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

JESUS AND ADLER. PLEASE HAVE FAITH. EVERTHING IS AT STAKE, YOU HAVE NOTHING TO LOSE AND WE HAVE EVERYTHING TO GAIN.

MILITANT, "MILITARY" NONVILENT ACTION IS A MORAL & SPIRITUAL IMPERITIVE.

We cannot be Christian if we are anything less.

SPIRITUAL: "Saving" the Soul is to be a brother to a stranger that will gladly sacrifice themselves to help. This and only this can activate, "Save" the Immortal Soul.

MENTAL: IF OUR MIND IS DEAD, WE ARE DEAD. WILL GOD / CONSCIENCE / MORALITY / HUMANITY FORGIVE US IF WE LEAVE A DYING MAN UNATTENDED?

IF WE NEGLECT MILITANT NONVIOLENCE RISKING ENTIRELY OUR LIVES, WE ARE MORALLY AND SPIRITUALY LOST, FOREVER.

3.10.2007

If the Military turned their way of life into ritual and belief, killing would cease

The Chuch of today has unwittingly become the anti-Christ. It has taken what was to be a Religion, a total lifestyle of totally sacraficial Otherishness; and turned it into Ritual, Afterlife oriented "magic," imprisoned it on Sunday morning, and made it into "air freshener" to enable us to stand the stench of our murderous SELFISHNESS. "Nothing is so tempting as evil in the guise of virtue," Dr. Martin Luther King. We use "Christianity" as the garb that enables our culture of selfishness. It was to be the opposite.

We must learn from the Military. Yes, they have ritual and dogma, but they use it in the servide of an all-embracing lifestyle, NOT INSTEAD.

Jesus called us to a radically different way of life - Total Brotherhood at all cost, even at the cost of your life; IMMEDIATELY at the cost of your life if necessary. "Love as I have love," Jesus
