Mission. Cycling. We're bleeding.



 


We'll be okay, and it's not James blood. But it's our blood. Oh man, poor Sol. A Thousand Miles, 40% of the way to California, about 45 days so far, the shortest solar days of the year behind us. and he's saying, stop man. We got problems. We need repairs and it's too cold to be working Outdoors, oh well. Three flat tires yesterday. Two so far today. Right hand trailer wheel wobbling. Seat back support broken. Cycle analyst, the brain, totally Haywire. 12-volt system in the cab and the trailer both blown out. Torque sensor crazy. Brakes in bad need of replacement and or adjustment. Long pedal chain in bad need of adjustment. Trailer motor chain adjustment.... tomorrow morning I'll see if the Walmart will allow me to stay a second night presuming that there's no problem tonight. And maybe a third. We're not in any danger, were very tired. But we're okay. It won't kill us, will grow.


Update. Work in progress. Hands get numb but other than that we're okay. Walmart seems to be very accommodating for a day or two working on the vehicle here. That's a great Mercy. The wobble in the rear trailer wheel has been diagnosed and replacement parts on order and things are solidified so we can be safe until we get to the parts in a week.

 Bike Traveler group: How does a person bike camp in frigid areas, for weeks at a time, in regards to drying wet, sweaty clothes?



James reply: I have cumulative weeks and months of experience with this. Number of things come to mind when I think of what makes it manageable for me. Managing my layers while exercising so as to minimize how much clothing gets damp or wet. I use  the cold environment to my advantage while exercising to minimize sweat. The last several days in weather between 25 and 35 degrees Fahrenheit after warming up cycling I removed all layers except for my base layer and put windbreaker over that. I was perfectly fine while exercising and only got one layer wet. I have also at times managed my arrival such that in the preceding 15 minutes or half an hour I would move from highly vigorous exercise to cause me to sweat to something less than that but warm enough I figured to be evaporating the clothing. If the next day I figure it will be warm enough and sunny enough that I can dry my base layer I'll strip it off and put on a dry one when I complete exercising and then of course layer up with warm stuff. If I do not figure that the next day will be good for thawing and drying out a wet base layer I'll take Extra Care in having it as dry as possible before I finish exercising and then I'll layer up with it on and use my body to dry it out.

And now Sol has a proper seat

 And now, we have a proper seat, thanks to this incredibly generous, able, visionary engineer designer Builder Khanh Dam. Demonstrably there may be no one that appreciates the elf more than I do.  Or who uses it more seriously, certainly not many. It is an engineering Marvel, visionary.  Having a properly adjustable seat, height, forward aft, seat back angle, like any respectable recumbent trike for a serious cyclist as oppposed to to those using it as an electric vehicle with pedals, no disrespect to anyone, it's not a luxury, it's an absolute necessity.

Just under 30 Watts electric per miles seems to be our maximum efficiency, 50 watts per mile total. Wonderful.

 If I Target eight or eight and a half miles an hour when I'm peddling as opposed to coasting downhill, that seems to be the Sweet Spot, slower than that seems to get into motor efficiency issues, faster apparently wind drag starts becoming significant. And eight or eight and a half miles an hour works perfectly well for me. That's about 40 miles per day, recently half of the electricity or no more than two-thirds that the sun is giving me, and about as long as my but can stand, and about three or four thousand calories per day beyond base metabolism which is an additional 1500 calories per day. This is absolutely the most wonderful machine that Khanh created, and Rex inspired. It is such an ethical way for James to exist, such an incredibly light footprint on the children's future, and it is very powerful at stirring the occasional soul. Below is a rough estimate of how the next 30 days will be spent.

Sol is delighted to go slow on steep, but not thrilled.

 So there was a lot of climbing today, not much distance, not much solar energy because of all the trees and clouds yesterday, we ended the day at about 60% battery, maybe 50%. so James decided to set the contribution factor for Saul at 3 instead of 4 for each watt that James produces. He expected to see considerably better than the 50 to watts per-mile that he's been demanding of Sol's electricity. Not so. The conclusion being that Sol is delighted to go at the low speed that less contribution from Sol yields, more time at two-and-a-half or three miles an hour, but not without a price. The motors were cool, but none the less clearly not running at Peak efficiency. Interesting lesson.

Cycling blog long overdue. Recap of the last 2 months by speaking of today.


Item. Savoring and Treasuring 100% energy Extraction and investment every inch of travel. Allowing not any second to escape without making an energy contribution. It is a wonderful thing. Not intuitive But very natural when the body keeps in it mind. Update. A round dish sort of object emerged again today about 2 inches toward the groin from the knee. And what was most helpful to implement this item was to allow no instant when there was not upward action by the thigh complimented by downward action by the other thigh exiting a rolling energy on that object.

Item. Adding power with 100% Engagement 100% of the time summoning power rather than attempting to periodically force . Summoning power is a Conceptual sort of thing. Requires considerable faith but today that doesn't mean a lot of mental effort. Just keeping it in mind. This is a natural partner with this 1st point above. Savoring Every inch of travel as an opportunity to feel contribution of energy and when more or less energy is required attempting that within the constant velocity cadence of the moment by summoning additional power or energy Every fraction of an inch of travel

item through Every other element of the last 2 months is it play. Probably largely unconscious today.

Item. Thee feet and therefore the legs weight are hanging on the pedals which is Ana notion of rest and also correlates with the proper Relaxation Virtual limpness of the lower legs from the Upper part of the shin forward All the way through the toes.

Item. Constant velocity stare step.

Item. Note. The metrics for this 1st day of resumed travel are certainly respectable. at 212 watts per hour.

Item. Note. The experience of power is in the thighs and as far as the Part of the thighs closest to the knee. If James tries to explain it it is not unlike the cute nursing action of a cat's paws but James is reaching for that. but that's what it's like.

The sides of the spherical object, the cylindrical object vertical between the knees is where the speed of rotation, the velocity is found.



 How many times before James has realized this he does not recall. It has been operating so many of The Times that everything was going well. But if it was brought to conscious competence before it has been lost and forgotten. Alzheimer's? Whatever.

With all the wonderful revelations of yesterday and they probably are, they were not sufficient from the 1st 40 minutes to return that wonderful performance at the end. It took a new element being brought to mind . That the Side of the object is where the current velocity and therefore the necessary velocity is to be found. Worth remembering maybe every trip at the beginning?

item. Drop the Heel a little bit. Dropped the Heel a little bit.

Item. Watch the size of the object at the knees. It matters. The task is to move the knees past synchronized that vertical cylindrical object. Today the diameter of the knees was a bit too wide so the proper leverage point vs that object kept throwing the body out of whack. Too small is not good but too large is not either.

3.4.20 cycling

Cycling. Very good ride so far. 

item. Roiling the knees has to move the pedals. 

Item. Roiling the knees is smothe circular or it is losing contact with the mechanism 

item. All power is at the knees so adjust accordingly to disempower the feet and empower the knees. 

Item. Generally reaching lower w the knees is a way of empowering and keeping them in contact with the 360゚ object. This is not intuitive nor does the body rebel. 

Item. Lower legs completely limp linkages  relaxed, completely unflexed. This took an hour and a 1/2 or more to evolve. The level of trust seems almost impossible but then it comes. Knees sort of floating as they circularly Royal. 

Cycling continued. Well, this is surprising. Focusing all energy  on the inside of the knee seems to be of multiple important benefits. For whatever reasons the right leg wants to splay outward today. And focusing all energy on the inside of the knee which seems as much psychological as anything else a Effective way of dealing with that But it also seems to contribute to the relaxing owes a lower leg to be a limp Linkage . It even seems increasing the power output.

Item. round heavy object between the knees is back. It is mechanically real derive from the circularity of all the other mechanical elements 

 item. Rotating that heavy object. That is the task, to find its current rotation, it is heavy, and to add energy to that period

Item. As mission within the last week, the Recognition of the following mechanics, following the canaco truth, have proved instrumental. If the knees are an object roiling in a circular manner Then the pedals must be receiving pressure, the petals must be rotating also. therefore can be virtually and should be virtually ignored. Profoundly enabling.  it is not intuitively obvious. But now that it is brought to mind it is tremendously empowering of really good things.

Cycling continued. Also crucial. James, you cannot go back. If you have allowed momentum to decrease, velocity of rotation to decrease. if you have allowed that don't pretend other wise. You're only break and overexert yourself. Recalibrate, gracefully accept your new velo city of rotation and work from there. everything else, your natural inclination is destructive fantasy. Nothing to be gained everything to be lost. Be honest with Where You Are.

Item. Remembering that the objects that gives the news is constant velocity unless the vehicle is dramatically changing in speed.

2.18.20 Cycling. A new friend with echoes from the past . Move weight onto the back off the feet empowering the knees .


No change in direction at all from logs of the last month. But a nice consolidation show up today. A good ride 2 days ago but some skeletal strain began to show in the hips . Not the fault of earlier techniques but still sent James searching. 

 .... Anyway, As with all blogs in the last months Getting in touch with the circular things that the roiling knees are is extremely helpful, central time a constant velocity stair step. 

This really promising addition today helps implement and reinforce and protect that period 

Today is a fairly intense travel day, James carrying himself plus 700 pounds Chris 

 And this at for miles an hour. And in no circumstances when the grade increases even a little bit that loss of momentum is felt and the impulse of James' body is to likely lean forward and pressed forward with the like. 

 this new friend,  mentioned in the headline, Are a much healthier response to that with everything gained and nothing lost. Transfer body weight to James back and lower upper shoulders off of feet all weight transferred that way. And people knees roiling at a very fast jogging katel spirit Wonderful output wonderful sustainability No seeming the scriptural press . A routine the James' very much hope C remembers.

2.16.20 Iowa. A final piece of the riddle. Maintaining vehicle momentum, to minimize electrical input.


 Without the miracle of momentum idea the miracle of Iowa would not have happened. James and sol had not a fraction of the battery or motor capacity that we now have, less than half. Nor the wall outlet AC recharge ability nor technique and comfort and strategy. So everything leading up to Iowa and after was a zealous and enjoyable fascinatione and attempt to maximize miles per electrical watthr and because of this it was realized that , And realized after a year or more of moving the vehicle, it was realized that to optimize efficiency meant minimize even the smallest loss of momentum because regaining physical momentum and the vehicle is extremely costly. Even then we were probably a 800 pounds total. 

So the notion of momentum was extremely real in that sense Find a wonderful natural motivator of James once it became clear in the final day I think leading up to Iowa Where he wanted the veh and himself to show well as an honest means of transportation in 

 It may or may not be that in this log James recalls what yesterday and today rocket back. I just might not remember. What it came back It came back. And for the last hour and a 1/2 or 2 James has explored Having that idea of maintaining the minute momentum, inertia , of sol At all times. And it has when it so today at least a wonderful natural intuitive motivator and informer of the body. So many of the goals spoken out in recent weeks and months and years are just naturally harnessed by this so Chris lock today and the experience today does not supplant anything of the logs in recent weeks there is no. It affirms them and it adds alongside them a wonderful means, a simple idea, but does so much to make Because so much to make all those wonderful conceptions naturally happen.

1. 30.20 2 primary but two enabling elements today. Cycling. Constant velocity, stair step, but also roiling including upward, and patients during the gap.



It seems that these last 2 have been unconscious competence in recent weeks or achieved in some other way. This almost 2 hour journey today with James carrying himself plus about 750 pounds, this journey began acceptably in the 1st hour but certainly no magic except for the end of that hour
